The Art of Stained Glass - Katie Doig (Firewolf)

FireWolf by Katie DoigI’ve always loved and been involved in art of some sort, whether it is painting, sculpture, pottery, or metalwork. It was during a ‘taster’ day about 15 years ago that I first experienced working with glass.

I didn’t come back into contact with it again until I moved to Somerset 9 Years ago. I studied traditional lead work and went on to work with the application of various paints and stains and use a kiln to fuse and mould the glass.

I love the relationship glass has with light. The ideas I have for particular windows or hanging art pieces are, by the mediums’ very nature, influenced by its position in relation to the four directions. The amount and quality of light it receives is paramount to the design. Even the glass itself, many of the pieces being handmade ‘one offs’, are individual in their pattern and colour.  Everything has to be considered. The window becomes a part of its surroundings, almost a living thing, changing and reacting to what is around it, to the time of day, to the Seasons, to the Elements.

Raven's Call by Katie DoigThere is also an unpredictability and fragility about glass which I find fascinating and which attracts me, particularly when it is subjected to fiery energies of the kiln.

Many of my ideas for windows relate to my Druid path, connecting with the elements, the moon and sun and natures’ ever turning wheel. I love using animals in my work and enjoy researching fables and old folklore to add interest to the pieces.

I find this art form inspirational, challenging, absorbing, draining, stimulating, and deeply satisfying.
I hope you enjoy my work.
