SEEKING INNER HARMONY THROUGH MUSIC
Holy Island by Arran, Scotland

Clement Jewitt

With Clement Jewitt, Bmus, PhD, composer, writer & improviser

The object of this course is to open our hearts to our souls' purposes through making improvised music together. Performing skill is not required. What matters is what comes from the heart. Just being there, silent but fully present, will be honoured. Bring an instrument and/or your voice, and something important to you to share with the group if you wish, which might be an object, a dance or song you can teach us, a poem, or anything else. Some mainly ethnic percussion and other instruments will be provided.

We will work at truly listening to each other through a variety of exercises and enjoyable frameworks for improvisation. We may use poems to improvise to, or dream images, or just by allowing what comes. Collective decision making will be of the essence, but there will be no pressure in that or other directions. There will be time to explore the beautiful and peaceful island and to join the regular meditations, both being a definite part of the entire experience.

Clement has facilitated such workshops in the last decade in England, Ireland and Wales.

FROM ORIENT TO OCCIDENT: Lady Alchimia's Royal Progress Through Metalical Time
NOA Community Centre (Ferry Centre), Summertown, Oxford

Dr Marie Angelo for the Jupiter Trust - 7:30pm

A striking engraving of 1693 depicts the Royal or Hermetick Art of transformation in person. From commentator Stanislas Klossowski de Rola we learn that:
'...The hair of Lady Alchimia is Fire. Her eyes are Sun and Moon, the twin principles - Mercury and Sulphur - of the work. Her breath is Air and the influx carried in the shape of rays of Light. The three stars on her forehead are the three works, and the milk flowing from her generous breasts is Lac Virginis, the Virgin's Milk which nourishes the Stone...'

Who is this mysterious lady? Where does she come from? How did she find her way through Egypt, China, Greece, and Arabia to arrive promptly in Latin Europe on 11th February 1144? What Medieval and Renaissance events have shaped her thus? This evening we will accompany her awhile along "the Way and the Level Road" in search of that light.

Dr Marie Angelo runs the MA in Transpersonal Arts and Practice at the University of Chichester, leading a pathway of Transformative Studies that takes the dazzling illuminations of a Renaissance alchemical masterwork as its guide. Her background in Archetypal Depth Psychology, Arys and Humanities rests upon the Arts of Cosmos and Tradition. Her article "Splendor Solis: Inviting the Image to Teach" appeared in the Art and Image issue of Harvest 2005, and forms the basis of a forthcoming book on the Alchemical art of seeing. MA Programme are on the University website. Marie can be contacted by m.angelo [at] hermetika [dot] org( email).

SOME SECRET PLACE: Exploring Pagan Spirituality & Ritual
Treadwell's Bookshop, 34 Tavistock St., Covent Garden WC2E 7PB

Peter Mahoney and Friends
7.15 for 7.30 start. £5 payable at time of booking.

These are beginner's pagan ritual evenings, perfect for those starting out on the pagan path, or as solitary witches. Some Secret Place is made up of some talk, some small group discussion on devotion, ceremony, spirituality, and relationship with deity. Most of all, though, it is experiential. It's about doing and feeling rather than theorising. We hope that people who come along will deepen their personal relationship with the pagan gods. This is for people who have done some reading on witchcraft, Wicca and/or paganism, and who are familiar with at least its general theological tenets. We assume you are pagan and want to practice it, but we don't presume you are experienced.

Group size is small - we don't take more than 17 people for the evening. The organisers want this to be a gentle, intimate and thoughtful experience. You can come once, come regularly, or come intermittently - whatever suits you best.

BOOKING: Please book in advance via info [at] treadwells-london [dot] com( email) or Tel. +44 (0)20 7240 8906 or via Skype at treadwells-london. Map on our website.

TWENTY YEARS AND MORE: Research into Minority Religions, New Religious Movements and 'the New Spirituality'
London School of Economics

An International Conference organised by INFORM and CESNUR in association with ISORECEA

On 1st January 1988, Inform (Information Network Focus on Religious Movements, website) opened its doors to the public for the purpose of providing information that is as objective, reliable and up-to-date as possible about minority religions. Later that same year, CESNUR (the Centre for Studies on New Religions, website) was established by a group of European and North American scholars with the similar aim of contributing to our knowledge and understanding of minority religions. Five years later, following the collapse of communism, scholars studying religion in post-socialist Europe founded ISORECEA (The International Study of Religion in Eastern and Central Europe Association), which has held regular meetings resulting in a number of publications concerning religion in the region.

As part of their twentieth anniversary celebrations, these networks are jointly organising this conference in order to assess the changes that have taken place over the past two decades, survey the current situation, and consider the fate of religious and spiritual groups in an increasingly multi-cultural world.

The Registration Desk will be open from 11:30am on Wednesday 16th April in Room D202 Clement House. A field visit to the Swaminarayan Temple is arranged at 2:00pm for those who wish to attend. The welcome lecture then begins at 5:00pm with a Welcome and Introduction by Eileen Barker and guest speaker Graham James, The Right Revd Bishop of Norwich. On the Thursday, Friday and Saturday there are parallel sessions with talks from over 200 researchers and academics from nearly 40 different countries. There is also a Medieval Banquet arranged for Friday night, with a 3 course meal, unlimited wine, and dancing by torch-light. The Conference will officially end on the evening of Saturday 19th (with further visits being arranged for Sunday 20th).

Participants will be responsible for arranging their own accommodation and are recommended to book in advance. A list of possible places is available at the ‘Conference 2008 Accommodation List’ on the Inform website.

To register for the Conference please see the CESNUR website. The Medieval Banquet can also be booked and paid for at the CESNUR website.

SUPERNATURAL SCARY POE TALES: A Night of Stories to Shiver By
Treadwell's Bookshop, 34 Tavistock St., Covent Garden WC2E 7PB

Dedwydd Jones and Michael David
7.15 for 7.30 pm start. £5.00 in advance.

Magical experiences, indeed spirit hauntings, can be induced by a good ghost or horror story. This is a night where you can prove that to yourself again, listening by candle-light to tales by that master of the macabre, Edgar Allan Poe. Your necromancers are two engaging reader-performers, Mike David and Dedwydd Jones. They will be performing complete readings of The Raven, The Tell-Tale Heart and The Oval Portrait,as well as Annabel Lee, 'Alone', other poems and extracts from Poe’s letters. The readings are interwoven with short narrative passages from Jones’ novel about Poe, The Raven Man.

Who are these two gentlemen? Here they are in their own words. Dedwydd Jones is a man of a certain ripish age who has been writing journalism, poetry and plays for longer than some people tarry on this globe; he is something of a bete noir to the Welsh Arts Establishment, being a renegade and republican and despiser of all things petty or mediocre. He also has several novels and short story collections in print. Mike David is not quite so ripe as Mr Jones, but has been acting, writing, directing and teaching for the best part of thirty years. He has written and performed in plays about WB Yeats and Robert Louis Stevenson and currently polishing off The Barbed-Wire Actor, about Antonin Artaud.

Treadwell’s provides the red wine, moody setting and candle light. Let the horrors be summoned on this night.

BOOKING: Please book in advance via info [at] treadwells-london [dot] com( email) or Tel. +44 (0)20 7240 8906 or via Skype at treadwells-london. Map on our website.

Saturday 19 April 2008
PAGAN FEDERATION WESSEX CONFERENCE
Town Hall, Glastonbury, Somerset

The stalls this year will include Capall Bann Publishing, Occult Fetish, Green Man Books, Wolf & Moon Crafts, Nightstar Flutes, Damh the Bard, Ancient Instruments, Steve Patterson (Cornish wood carvings & other craft goods).

Damh the Bard is a modern-day Bard whose spirituality, and love of folk tradition, is expressed through his music, storytelling and poetry. Drawing on the Bardic traditions his performances are both entertaining and educational, weaving a tapestry of myth, peace, and anthems that speak directly to the heart, but never without a good splash of humour. Damh is a musical storyteller who works within the world of myth that cannot be proved; where the Faerie really do dance on Midsummer's Eve, where the trees talk, and the Hollow Hills take you into the realms of Annwn. Where the Goddess rides her horse, guiding you to magic, and the Horned God of old calls us from the shadows of the Greenwood. So relax, and let the music take you there.

Dr. Owen Davies took his first degree in history at Cardiff University, and then went on to do a history PhD at the University of Lancaster. His main field of research is on the history of witchcraft and magic, particularly from the eighteenth century onwards. His new book is Murder, Magic, Madness: The Victorian Trials of Dove and the Wizard and his other books include Cunning-Folk: Popular Magic in English History; Witchcraft, Magic & Culture 1736-1951; A People Bewitched: Witchcraft & Magic in Nineteenth Century Somerset.

Emma Restall Orr is a spiritual teacher and priestess with, arguably, the highest profile of any Druid in the world today. She is a spokesperson for Druidry in the media as head of the international Druid Network, Chief of the Order of the Yew, and former Joint Chief of the British Druid Order. She teaches courses worldwide, and lectures at universities and conferences on Druidry, environmentalism, healing, and women's spirituality. Emma has appeared in numerous press features, on TV and radio, in national, regional and specialist media all over the world over the last ten years.

Janet Farrar & Gavin Bone are practising Wiccans and authors of books on Paganism, Magick and Witchcraft. Prior to Stewart’s death on February 7th 2000, Janet and Stewart have been publishing their work since 1971, and are recognised as experts on Witchcraft and the Occult. Gavin joined them in 1993 and has worked with them on numerous books up until Stewart’s death. Janet and Stewart were initiated by Alex and Maxine Sanders in 1970 whilst still resident in London and Gavin was initiated into Seax-Wicca (1986) by a coven he belonged to in his home town of Portsmouth. Janet actually went along to get her friend “out of this weird cult” and ended up staying. They live in the Republic of Ireland, in a small cottage with an influx of field mice, eight lazy cats and a goat called Fanny. They run a progressive coven in Ireland called Coven Na Callaighe and have links with several covens in the United States, Australia, New Zealand and Europe. Their latest publication Progressive Witchcraft will be on sale at the Conference and we are hoping we might be able to persuade them to have a book signing.

The Dolmen first began back in the early 1990’s as a bunch of musicians able to knock out a few tunes at the local covens get togethers but by 1994 they were travelling up and down the motorways of England to pagan events of all sizes. With five albums under their belt the un-relentless energy and quality of pagan music still haunts and enchants their audiences all over the world. Their latest album ‘Songs from the Cauldron’ was recorded as a tribute to those Witches that lost their lives in the Burning Times. It receives continuous air play on the American Pagan Radio and stands to be one of their biggest selling albums to date. The other albums available are Dolmen Folk, Dolmenation, Spirit of the Land, Undefeated. Hopefully, all of these will be available at the Conference. These days The Dolmen are in great demand but they have never forgotten their roots and always put pagan events first. We are extremely lucky to get them and I’m sure it will be a fantastic night!

James North
7.15 for 7.30 start. £5
This talk re-examines the traditions of St. George, the legends of King Arthur and the Grail myths. There will also be readings from Shakespeare, who was born and died on St.George’s Day.

James North studied the history of philosophy at Magdalen College, Oxford and the Warburg Institute. His interests include renaissance hermeticism, Elizabethan literature and cryptography. Friday 25 April 2008
THE MERCURIAL EMPEROR: The Magic Circle of Rudolf II in Renaissance Prague
NOA Community Centre (Ferry Centre), Summertown, Oxford

Dr Peter Marshall for the Jupiter Trust - 7:30pm

In this illustrated talk, Peter Marshall will explore the extraordinary galaxy of great minds that gathered at the court of Rudolf II in Prague at the turn of the seventeenth century, attracted by his generous patronage and the spirit of free enquiry. They included such luminaries as the alchemist Sendivogius, the magus John Dee, the astronomers Tycho Brahe and Johannes Kepler, the philosopher Giordano Bruno and the artist Arcimboldo. Together they formed the stepping-stone from the medieval world view to the modern.

Like Faust, Rudolf was prepared to risk all in the pursuit of the occult arts and the Philosopher's Stone. The New Hermes Trismegistus, as he was known, paid more attention to the stars than to the affairs of State. In his Chambers of Curiosities, he amassed one of the greatest collections of natural and scientific wonders. But he also had to face the Ottoman Empire, growing religious discord and an ambitious younger brother. As a result he lost his empire and nearly his sanity, but he helped turn Prague into a sparkling crucible of alchemy, astronomy and magic and enabled the city to enjoy a golden age of peace and creativity before Europe was engulfed in the Thirty Years' War.

Dr Peter Marshall is the author of The Philosopher's Stone, World Astrology and The Mercurial Emperor (published in hardback as The Theatre of the World). He has written fifteen books, which are being translated into fourteen different languages. See also his website.

Course beginning Saturday 26 to Sunday 27 April 2008
ESOTERIC SOUL HEALING - One Year Training Course 2008-9
Miracles Room, Glastonbury Experience, 2-4 High Street, Glastonbury, Somerset

With Kathy Jones
Heal Yourself, Learn how to Heal or Deepen your Understanding of the Principles and Practice of Healing.
Esoteric Soul Healing is a subtle and powerful form of energetic healing, that works with the energies of the whole person, soul, personality and physical body to help bring us back to a state of well-being and ease, from the state of dis-ease. The word 'Healing' is used in this sense of making whole, of redressing imbalances that have built up in the emotions, in the mind and in the body. 'Soul' is that part of us which is eternal, invisible, spiritual and filled with universal love, which connects us to each other and to the divine and all life. Esoteric Soul Healers learn to recognize the presence of the soul within themselves and in other people and learn how to call these powerful transforming energies in to heal themselves and their patients. 'Esoteric' means that these are skills that can only be learned through practice and experience. This is knowledge which cannot be acquired from a book, but which is learned through the application of the principles of energetic healing. It is knowledge which in the past was hidden because it was believed to be powerful and life-changing. It is now being made available to those who wish to deepen their healing skills.

This intensive training takes place over six weekends spread throughout the year. During each teaching session there will be exercises to develop both personal consciousness and healing abilities and the opportunity to practice healing and healer/patient communication skills with fellow students. In addition between weekends students must complete homework, including recorded healing sessions, in-depth case studies, reading and prepare for a test of their healing skills. Students are given a copy of Kathy’s book Chiron in Labrys:an Introduction to Esoteric Soul Healing (Ariadne Publications), which forms the foundation for the teaching on this course.

On successful completion of the training students will receive an Attendance or Practitioner Esoteric Soul Healer Certificate, depending on the level of skill acquired. The course is suitable for those who wish to heal themselves and for those who want to fully develop their healing skills and become practicing healers.

ARTHUR MACHEN AND THE OCCULT: Madness, Magic and Mystics on the Streets of London
Treadwell's Bookshop, 34 Tavistock St., Covent Garden WC2E 7PB

Edward Gauntlett
7.15 for 7.30 pm start. £5 payable in advance.

Arthur Machen (1863-1947) is best known for his horrifying tales of the supernatural, probably most notably for that decadent "incoherent nightmare of sex", The Great God Pan; and for the mystical morale-boosting snippet "The Bowmen". But Machen was also was also a mystic, actor, journalist… and magician. Tonight Ed Gauntlett takes us into Machen’s magic, occultism, mysticism and Christian religiosity. Machen, for instance, was a long-term friend of A E Waite and was a member of the celebrated Order of the Golden Dawn. Moreover, his mystic and magical sensibility was interwoven with his feeling for London: once he arrived from his native Wales in 1880 with dreams of making it as a writer, he never really left. So deep is London in his consciousness that in his writing he transmuted London’s streets, through his imagination, into a city of visions and nightmares. His influences also include his contemporaries – Crowley, Austin Osman Spare, Kenneth Grant, whom we meet along the way in the talk, along with Machen’s thematic influences - not least the Little People, alchemy, and the Sangraal.

Ed Gauntlett is lifelong student of magic, and holds an MA in Literature, Religion and Philosophy. He has spoken at Treadwell’s last year, on Charles Williams, and is back by popular demand. Currently he is working on a study of the Secret Tradition in late 19th and early 20th century supernatural horror fiction.
