THE SHAMAN, THE VISION AND THE BRAIN: Repeat of Sold Out Lecture
Treadwell's Bookshop, 34 Tavistock St., Covent Garden WC2E 7PB
Dr David Luke (University of Northampton)
7.15 for 7.30 start. £5.
Stop Press! SECOND DATE BY POPULAR DEMAND. This second date has just been added to accommodate the 30+ turned away from the last performance of the talk.
In this lecture Dr David Luke looks at the way current neuroscience understands people’s experiences of visionary encounters with discarnate beings. In all times and places people have had profoundly real experiences of deities, demons, angels, elves, aliens, and ghosts. Often these occur when a person is in altered state – dreaming, on drugs, is near death. The connection between the altered state and the ‘visitation’ is explored in a vivid illustrated talk, which takes a tour through folklore, myth, neurochemistry, magic, shamanism, the Luciferian witch cult, brain anatomy, the pineal gland, the Reg Veda, psychoactive toads and a cauldron full of other odd ingredients. A lively slide lecture format followed by discussion.
Dr David Luke is a popular returning speaker at Treadwell’s. He recently completed his PhD at the Centre for the Study of Anomalous Psychological Processes at the University of Northampton, where he is also an occasional visiting lecturer. Northampton is the nation’s most important centre for scholars of parapsychology.

BOOK LAUNCH PARTY - NAUGHTY WODEHOUSE: For 'Portrait of a Disciplinarian'
Treadwell's Bookshop, 34 Tavistock St., Covent Garden WC2E 7PB
Aishling Morgan and Virgin Books
From 7.00 pm. Free.
Tonight calls all fans of the era of PG Wodehouse, dandies and chaps, to this party to celebrate the release of the last erotic novel in Aishling Morgan's historical erotica series. The author, a friend of Treadwell's, has made a bit of a name for himself in writing lighthearted erotica that pays hommage to great literary novels. His last work, Beastly Behaviour, paid tribute to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's The Hound of the Baskervilles, while Charles Dickens and Jane Austen have also had their turns.
This time it's distant shades of Wodehouse - all the fun and humour but rather more sex and naughtiness. The author writes: " I have always found the Master’s work subtly erotic - his description of Bobby Wickham in a negligee, for example, or the way he implies that both she and Stephanie Byng would benefit from a spanking – although never overt. His style, both in narrative and dialogue, is too comic to work as full blown erotica, so I have therefore drawn only lightly on his technique, but borrowed extensively from his marvellous collection of motifs."
Come on out for a drink, Aunt Agatha! Jeeves will be serving.

THELEMA INTENSIVE: A Serious Introductory Course to the Tradition
Treadwell's Bookshop, 34 Tavistock St., Covent Garden WC2E 7PB
Marcus Katz
9.45 arrival for 10.00 am start, finishing 4.30 pm both days. £93.
Runs Saturday and Sunday, 5th and 6th July. Never before offered in London, this course offers a serious yet highly approachable introduction to Thelema and Aleister Crowley.
It looks at Thelema as a philosophy and its place in the Western esoteric tradition - then go on to experience practices and texts that communicate Crowley's magic, including key rituals, the reception of the Book of the Law (Liber Al), and the designs of the Thoth Tarot deck. Throughout, the tutor will explain and explore the world-view underpinning this tradition, to enable familiarity with concepts such as the Aeons, the Gods and Goddesses of the Book of the Law, initiation and the grades of attainment. Marcus Katz will be using material unavailable to the general public, including research conducted in Egypt and notes from Crowley’s original manuscripts. There will be lecture, discussion, document examination, ritual work and meditation.
Marcus Katz is a longstanding magical practitioner who also holds an MA in Western Esotericism (Exeter), now doing doctoral research on western occult groups. He is an inveterate world traveller but currently lives in Cumbria, where he runs an esoteric teaching centre, The Faraway Centre. The course is not affiliated with any particular interpretation or of Crowley's work.

THE SHRINE OF THE GOLDEN HAWK: Ritualised Playreading of a Golden Dawn Egyptian Play
Treadwell's Bookshop, 34 Tavistock St., Covent Garden WC2E 7PB
Caroline Wise and Friends
7.15 fro 7.30 start. £10 payable in advance.
The Shrine of the Golden Hawk is playlet set in ancient Egypt, and was written by two members of the Order of the Golden Dawn, Florence Farr and Olivia Shakespear. The theme is mystical and magical, and represents some of the themes for which the Order’s teachings are most famed. Tonight the play is read by a cast that includes some of the performers from the legendary London 1993 production, and is coordinated by the same producer. A short ceremony will precede the reading, and a soiree will complete the night. There will be a donation from the proceeds to a breast cancer charity – in honour of the illness that claimed Farr who, unbeknownst to many, was the effective leader of the Order in its heyday in the 1890s. There will also be a memorial programme produced specially for the occasion. Seats very limited due to the small size of the venue, so early booking is advised. *This is a reprise of the sold-out Nov 2007 performance at Treadwell's.*

TALK BY STARHAWK: Earth Spirit, Earth Action
Methodist Church, Fore Street, Totnes, Devon TQ9 5RP
Time: 8:00 p.m. & 10:00 p.m. (There will be two talks that evening)
Cost - £4.00 per person
Starhawk will share her insights on the process of navigating the peak oil/climate change crises, as urban areas begin the shift to sustainability. How do we hold our commitment and keep our work emotionally viable, while allowing ourselves to feel the pain and fear of our current situation? How do we keep momentum in the face of setbacks and interpersonal differences? How do we continue to reach out and invite in those people who may be feeling numbed or powerless? How can we heal our personal relationships with the earth, so that we can feel sustained by nature, not just guilty and panicky? How can earth-based spiritual experiences and practices
inspire and support us in our work and our visioning? What place might spirituality take in our Energy Descent Plan? What inspires us? How do our passions translate into actions? What practical steps can we now take to reinforce our connections with the earth on an emotional, not just intellectual, level?
Presented by Transition Town Totnes.

WORKSHOP: Céili Dé - The Spouses of God
The Iron Mill Institute, Exeter, Devon
This earliest manifestation of Celtic Christianity is rooted in Druidic reverence for The Mother - Earth - as She ever-births The Incarnation in our surrendered hearts. This inner journey takes us through Nature and the Divinities of the Celtic Otherworld, beyond what our imagination will ever conceive, into the realms of the Unknowable One, who wants to break our hearts, so that we might find the Beloved there - and dissolve at last into the No-thingness beyond all things...
This living tradition is at once, lyrical, mythopoetic, esoteric and deeply devotional. It seeks balance at all times between the need for earthly, psychological and mystical development. It has more recently been hailed as "Celtic Sufism", having as it does, such an emphasis on the transformative power of Love.
This introductory workshop will explore some of the philosophy of the tradition and its application in real life. There will also be experiential work, such as sacred Chants in Gaelic and other spiritual exercises.

SOME SECRET PLACE: Exploring Pagan Spirituality & Ritual
Treadwell's Bookshop, 34 Tavistock St., Covent Garden WC2E 7PB
Peter Mahoney and Friends
7.15 for 7.30 start. £5.
Now with a Monday date as well. Some Secret Place is going from once a month to twice a month, due to popular demand and sold-out dates.
These are monthly beginner's pagan ritual evenings, perfect for those starting out on the pagan path, or as solitary witches. Some Secret Place is made up of some talk, some small group discussion on devotion, ceremony, spirituality, and relationship with deity. Most of all, though, it is experiential. It's about doing and feeling rather than theorising. We hope that people who come along will deepen their personal relationship with the pagan gods. This is for people who have done some reading on witchcraft, Wicca and/or paganism, and who are familiar with at least its general theological tenets. We assume you are pagan and want to practice it, but we don't presume you are experienced.
Group size is small - we don't take more than 17 people for the evening. The organisers want this to be a gentle, intimate and thoughtful experience. You can come once, come regularly, or come intermittently - whatever suits you best.
BOOKING: Please book in advance via info [at] treadwells-london [dot] com( email) or Tel. +44 (0)20 7240 8906 or via Skype at treadwells-london. Map on our website.

TREADWELL'S SOLITARY WITCHCRAFT COURSE: First Night: The Magical Book / the "Book of Shadows"
Treadwell's Bookshop, 34 Tavistock St., Covent Garden WC2E 7PB
Christina Oakley and Friends
7.15 for 7.30 start, runs till 9.30 pm. £10.
This is a short course of four fortnightly evenings in which beginning solitary witches can work practically on some of cunning folks arts. Tuition, guidance, encouragement and hand-on practice form the heart of every session. The tutors are all experienced and will be leading in turn the subject of their various specialities. The group size is kept deliberately small (maximum 18) so everyone can have plenty of attention.
First Session
Every witch has a Big Black Book, in which secrets, spells, recipes and other unknown things are written. Most solitary witches today have a few blank books they mean to turn into the Magical Booke of Arte, but find the prospect a little daunting. This session opens up the world of inspiration, secrets, mysteries, spell and what is the function of such a book. As a solitary, how do you decide how to make one / should you make one? What goes into it, and how do you get started? The activities of the evening will include showing round a selection of actual solitary witches’ books. We will look at the ways of illustrating them, the importance of handwriting, and what you might want to choose to start with, to put into your own one. To this end there will be the presentation of a few invocations and devotional pieces from the books of some of the witches present. Small group discussion and making an action plan on how to start your own book over the following fortnight.
Tutors: Peter Mahoney of ‘Some Secret Place’ ; Rebecca Wood of Hedgewitches’ Kitchen; Rebecca Beattie of Hedgewitches’ Kitchen; Marysia Kay, actress and witch; Christina Oakley Harrington of Treadwell’s.

YEATS' GOLDEN DAWN: Magic, Women, Passion, Celts, Mystics
Treadwell's Bookshop, 34 Tavistock St., Covent Garden WC2E 7PB
Mike David
7.15 for 7.30 start. £5.
Women and magic are two of the most vital themes underpinnig the work of WBYeats, who was arguably the greatest poet of the twentieth century. And the two themes were interlinked: Florence Farr, Olivia Shakespeare, Annie Horniman, Maud Gonne and George Yeats - each of these were also associated with magic, in particular the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn.
Tonight's performance by Mike David is made up of readings from letters, some poems and bits of plays. There will also be illustrated handouts and informational chat. It will bring to life WB Yeats' literature, his magic, the Golden Dawn and the contributions of the extraordinary woman in Yeats' circle. You will hear about automatic writing, ghosts, fairies, Celtic heroes, astrological cycles, revolutionary passions, Irish mysticism, and ceremonial magic.
Mike David is an actor, writer, and lover of things mystical, with over 30 years in the theatre. His performances bring together a variety of threads: the passionate monologue, the inspired lecture, the intense playreading and the one-man drama. His evenings are riveting.

GNOSTICS, GNOSTICISM & GNOSIS
Treadwell's Bookshop, 34 Tavistock St., Covent Garden WC2E 7PB
Jonathan Hill
7.15 for 7.30 start. £5.
Gnosticism is one of the most intriguing – and fashionable – religious movements of the ancient worlds. Once glimpsed only in the scathing denunciations of their opponents, the gnostics have suddenly become very familiar as discoveries of their writings in Middle Eastern deserts and in ancient monastic libraries have been widely published and translated. Sometimes it seems as though a rash of treatises, apocalypses, and secret gospels threatens to overturn traditional understandings of early Christianity and throw convention out of the window.
But what do we really know about the gnostics? Who were they, and what did they believe? And why did they believe it? What happened to them? In this talk we try to answer some of these questions. By looking at some of their key writings we will see what they really believed, and how much still remains unknown about major figures such as Basilides and Valentinus. And we will find out how the gnostics fit in to the ancient Mediterranean religious scene: what they thought of other movements of the time, and what others thought of them – whether Christian, pagan, or Neoplatonist. Some of the answers – and some of the questions that remain unanswered – may be surprising. But then the gnostics have always been good at overturning expectations.
Tonight's speaker recently completed his doctorate at the University of Singapore in Philosophy, and is the author of several books on religious belief. He returns to Treadwell's by popular request.

THE GORSEDD OF RHIANNON AND THE WHITE HORSE
Lughnasadh Rite
The White Horse at Uffington, near where Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Wiltshire meet
Welcome to the Lughnasadh Meeting of the Gorsedd of Rhiannon and the White Horse (Yr Orsedd Riannon a'r March Canwelw).
We will meet in the main car park at the White Horse around noon and then proceed to the area where the Gorsedd will be held. This could be anywhere in the White Horse complex dependent on numbers and weather. Recently this has either been at Dragon Hill or in the field east of the car park. We will make the decision on the day. (For those who are unable to manage the walk we'll lay on cars to ferry you to the site.) The format will be very much the BDO/TDN style of Gorsedd with Bardic initiation and handfastings offered if required. Contributions for the informal eisteddfod (songs, poems, stories) will be very welcome.

TREADWELL'S SOLITARY WITCHCRAFT COURSE: Second Night: Altar and Ritual
Treadwell's Bookshop, 34 Tavistock St., Covent Garden WC2E 7PB
Christina Oakley and Friends
7.15 for 7.30 start, runs till 9.30 pm. £10.
Second Session
This session looks at some actual witchcraft altar formats, and what goes onto a pagan altar – and indeed what asks what, for a pagan witch, is an altar for? From there we expand to look at what kinds of ritual can you, as a solitary witch, do – and find meaningful. The session will include demonstration of constructed altars in a few different formats, a layout of a pagan circle for one person, a short talk on how to practically apply the four elements four directions. We will do some hands-on practice of ritual, noting how it is tailored for working alone in a small space at home. The emphasis is on drawing upon tradition and upon maximising your personal spiritual experience. There will be small group discussion, a short meditation, and making an action plan on how to set up (or build upon upon) your altar and a personal ritual over the following week.
Course starts Weds 16 July and meets fortnightly. See that date for more details.

as you want to make it; there are workshop and talks to stimulate the
mind, music and dance to inspire the soul, and the warmth of community
to nourish the spirit.
Already booked are the award winning Seize the Day (www.seizetheday.org) to play on Friday night, and on Saturday the magical harper Sian James (www.sianjames.co.uk) will offer her talents with performance and workshop. Also booked are Damh the Bard, satirist Paul Mitchell, Magicfolk, poets Jade Moon and Liv Torc, storytellers and more. And for teachings on Druidry we have Canadian author Brendan Myers, and the enchanting Robin Herne, as well as your hosts - Emma Restall Orr and Mark Graham.
On Saturday we shall be hosting the Lammas Eisteddfod, an open contest for all bards, the winner becoming the bearer (for one glorious year) of the magical Spear of Lugh.
