Friday 2 May 2008
IN ORATORY AND LABORATORY: Heinrich Khunrath and Hermetic Philosophy
NOA Community Centre (Ferry Centre), Summertown, Oxford

Dr Peter Forshaw for the Jupiter Trust - 7:30pm

Heinrich Khunrath of Leipzig (1560-1605), "both doctor of medicines and faithful lover of theosophy", has been variously described as "one of the most remarkable theosophists and alchemists of the late sixteenth century" and "one of the greatest Hermetic philosophers". His magnum opus, The Amphitheatre of Eternal Wisdom, is best known for its collection of occult engravings, which have been counted among the most important mystical drawings in the world. Though frequently praised, they have rarely been understood, due to the mélange of languages and the complexity of their "hieroglyphical" and "theosophical" figures.

Examining the interplay between the Amphitheatre's images and text, and drawing comparisons with other representations of the occult in early modern Europe, this talk will discuss how Khunrath's notions of knowledge and wisdom, research and revelation, formed complementary facets of a worldview that aimed at the integration of scientific knowledge and religious belief under the motto Ora et Labora (Pray and Work).

Peter Forshaw's research interests are in learned magic and its relation to medicine, science and religion in early modern Europe. He is currently British Academy Postdoctoral Fellow at Birkbeck, University of London, and Honorary Fellow at the University of Exeter. He has published articles and chapters in collections on alchemy, magic and cabal, and is at present preparing a book, The Mage's Images: Occult Theosophy in Heinrich Khunrath's Early Modern Oratory and Laboratory for publication later this year.

WHAT YOUR CRYSTALS NEVER TOLD YOU: An Insider's Look at the Crystal Industry
Treadwell's Bookshop, 34 Tavistock St., Covent Garden WC2E 7PB

Tony Street (DPhil, Cantab)
7.15 for 7.30 start. £5.00 in advance.

Crystals: quartz for healing, obsidian for scrying, malachite to repel snakebite… the history of crystal and stone magic did not commence with the New Age, though certainly it’s had a huge revival in the new age movement. And there have always been merchants to provided the practitioner, too, from the time of the medieval market right up to today’s Mind-Body-Spirit Festival. Tonight’s talk is an insider’s look at the crystal-selling business. Dr Tony Street received his doctorate in Geology from Cambridge 30 years ago and has since then worked in rock business as a one-man mission for ethical trading, sourcing and dealing. Tonight he reveals all the ways that the unscrupulous sellers in this industry dupe customers, from dyeing cheap rocks to look like more valuable ones, to selling common duplicates for rarer stones, to strip-mining processes. He will be doing this talk with a table-full of samples showing the real and the fake, the genuine and the doctored, and will be teaching people how quickly to tell the differences. Anyone who buys rocks, crystals, stones or fossils – even if you just got a piece of amethyst for your pagan altar – will be both horrified and fascinated. We promise, you will never look at a lump of turquoise or obsidian the same way again.

Tony is a lively and entertaining speaker, and his talks always have a touch of the stand-up comedy feel to them, and not simply because he bears an uncanny resemblance to Billy Connolly. He is the proprietor of Tony Street Fossils, which operates from Covent Garden’s Jubilee Market, and is a trusted seller to much of London’s pagan community.

Wednesday 7 May 2008
EMANUEL SWEDENBORG: Sweden's John Dee - Angels, Demons and Spirits
Treadwell's Bookshop, 34 Tavistock St., Covent Garden WC2E 7PB

Richard Lines (Swedenborg Society)
7.15 pm for a 7.30 start. £5.00 in advance.

Emanuel Swedenborg (1688-1772) can be said to be Sweden's John Dee, but few occultists know about him. This inventor, scientist, diplomat and politician had a vivid spiritual life in which he actually saw and spoke to angels, spirits and demons, and voyaged spiritually to heaven and to hell -- almost daily, with shocking vividness, he said. A Christian, Swedemborg believed that the Bible's message was about how a person could evolve from a materialistic to a spiritual being; for example Genesis was, for him, not an account of the creation of Earth, but an account of man's rebirth in six steps. For all his Christian devotion, though, he wrote in sexually explicit terms at times, enough to shock. But love, he stressed, was the root of all. From this is his early form of a 'polarity' ideal - the union of man and woman, was, to his mind a perfect mirroring of the divine. Swedenborg was profoundly influential upon later esotericists and literary figures, including William Blake and Madame Blavatsky, so his ideas survived even if his fame did not. Richard Lines will talk about Swedenborg's achievements and about his surprisingly widespread influence. This talk is ideal for people interested in angelic communications, historians of spiritual ideas, and everyone who appreciates a mystical traveller across the spiritual planes.

Richard Lines is Secretary of the Swedenborg Society in Bloomsbury. He has a particular interest in Swedenborg's influence on literature. For more on Swedenborg, have a look at The Swedenborg Society website or Gary Lachman's article.

Friday 9 May 2008
ALCHEMY OF CREATION: An Exploration of Sacramental Science
NOA Community Centre (Ferry Centre), Summertown, Oxford

Clare Goodrick-Clarke for the Jupiter Trust - 7:30pm

Sir Isaac Newton said, "Nature seems to delight in transmutations." This illustrated talk takes us into the alchemical drama of Creation, cosmology, and the transmutations occurring in nature. We will explore the metaphysical aspects of alchemy as a sacramental science, meditating and reconciling celestial and terrestrial worlds.

The alchemists' relationship to the Cosmos, and to Nature herself, provides insights into the special gifts that the alchemical quest still offers to the contemporary world, especially in our search for health and wholeness for ourselves, and for the planet at this time of pressing ecological need.

Clare Goodrick-Clarke's research interests focus on the history of medical alchemy. She studied practical alchemy in the Paracelsian tradition with Manfred Junius (1929-2004). Clare is Honorary Fellow in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Exeter, where she teaches The Hermetic Art of Alchemy in the MA in Western Esotericism (for details of which see University Website. She is also a regular speaker at the New York Open Center "Esoteric Quest" Conferences in Europe. Clare is author of G.R.S.Mead and the Gnostic Quest and is a contributor to The Rosicrucian Enlightenment Revisited. She is a qualified homeopathic practitioner and writes regularly for the magazine, Picture of Health.

SOME SECRET PLACE: Exploring Pagan Spirituality & Ritual
Treadwell's Bookshop, 34 Tavistock St., Covent Garden WC2E 7PB

Peter Mahoney and Friends
7.15 for 7.30 start. £5 payable at time of booking.

These are monthly beginner's pagan ritual evenings, perfect for those starting out on the pagan path, or as solitary witches. Some Secret Place is made up of some talk, some small group discussion on devotion, ceremony, spirituality, and relationship with deity. Most of all, though, it is experiential. It's about doing and feeling rather than theorising. We hope that people who come along will deepen their personal relationship with the pagan gods. This is for people who have done some reading on witchcraft, Wicca and/or paganism, and who are familiar with at least its general theological tenets. We assume you are pagan and want to practice it, but we don't presume you are experienced.

Group size is small - we don't take more than 17 people for the evening. The organisers want this to be a gentle, intimate and thoughtful experience. You can come once, come regularly, or come intermittently - whatever suits you best.

BOOKING: Please book in advance via info [at] treadwells-london [dot] com( email) or Tel. +44 (0)20 7240 8906 or via Skype at treadwells-london. Map on our website.

ATHANORS IN THE GARAGE: The Practices of Practical Alchemy Today
Treadwell's Bookshop, 34 Tavistock St., Covent Garden WC2E 7PB

Paul Wood (Wood-Moss Herbals)
7.15 for 7.30 start. £5 in advance.

Paul Wood keeps alembics and athanors in his garage, and last summer he made a copper still in his garden, to make spirits of wine. His home has shelves lined up with glass jars of liquids with 'things' in them, steeping and waiting for the turn of the moon. Yes, really. Tonight Treadwell's introduces the world of the practising alchemist, with a talk by someone who actually lives this life. Today's alchemists, it should be noted, are not trying to turn lead into gold – rather they create herbal elixirs, salts, distillates, and traditional perfumes – 'lesser circulations'. With overheads, pictures and handouts, the speaker reveals how people actually do perform and practice this art. No prior knowledged is assumed, so the talk will be suitable for people who aren't already steeped in chemistry or alchemical terminology. This is one for the curious – learn and have fun.

Paul Wood has been working in alchemy for the past few years, and co-taught the Treadwell's Advanced Herbal Magic course in 2007. He has a love of traditional incenses and perfumes, is one half of Wood-Moss Herbals, and tonight promises to include few stories of his strangest alchemical adventures.

Thursday 15 May 2008
THE SOLITARY WITCH IN MODERN BRITAIN: Reflections on a Pagan Path
Treadwell's Bookshop, 34 Tavistock St., Covent Garden WC2E 7PB

Christina Oakley Harrington
7.15 fro 7.30 pm start. £5.00 in advance.

The hedgewitch in her cottage is found in fairy tales like Hansel & Gretel or, more kindly, in Beatrix Potter’s Mrs Tiggywinkle. Herbalist, nature mystic, crafter of homely spells and earthy wisdom. The pagan path is followed by many more than initiatory Wicca, yet there is much less historical or reflective awareness about it. Christina Oakley, a scholar-practitioner, looks at a range of issues concerned with what it’s like to build up a spiritual and practical life of this type of witch. She covers the background and work of seminal pioneers Marian Green and Rae Beth in Britain and Scott Cunningham and Raymond Buckland in the USA, reminding us that that solitary witches were originally thought both bad, wrong and ineffective – if not actually an impossibility. After a historical and theological survey, the talk turns to experience and practice: self-training and motivation; external models; the seduction of false history; skills and crafts; mystical activity; the pros and cons of working without mentors. The evening concludes with questions and discussion.

Christina Oakley Harrington holds a doctorate in History and is a former university lecturer in religious and medieval history. Currently she runs Treadwell’s. She loves the Thames, dances under the moon, and tries to mix herbs at least once a month.

BOOKING: Please book in advance via info [at] treadwells-london [dot] com( email) or Tel. +44 (0)20 7240 8906 or via Skype at treadwells-london. Map on our website.

SEVEN PLANETS, SEVEN MAGICS: Introductory Level Illustrated Lecture
Treadwell's Bookshop, 34 Tavistock St., Covent Garden WC2E 7PB

Lily Moss
7.15 for 7.30 start. £5 in advance.

Grimoires, cunning men, Wiccans, Christian Kabbalists, hedgewitches and even Renaissance neoplatonists all have this underlying principle in common - as above, so below. In Western Europe and Britain, this has, since the middle ages, been the guiding principle has been expressed largely through the seven sacred planets. Whether it be in a kamea, a sprig of St Johns Wort, angelic principalities, ritual metals, the idea that the planets embody forces on earth that the magician works with. The astrologer analyses these, the nature mystic contemplates them, but they are everywhere. Tonight's speaker is passionate about planetary magic of all varieties, from wax seals to floral tinctures to solomonic rituals. Lily Moss tonight introduces the seven planets in this illustrated talk which promises to be lively, engaging, and full of slides of gorgeous old woodcuts, paintings and illustrations. She talks through their attributes, some of the poetry and myths written about them, and tells some stories of her own experiences with them.

When not brewing or inscribing things planetary, Lily is a student of English Literature at Queen Mary, University of London, and a keen photographer. She is also one half of the much-loved Wood-Moss Herbals and regularly runs workshops at Treadwells.

THE SHAMAN, THE VISION AND THE BRAIN: The Human Anatomy of the Gods
Treadwell's Bookshop, 34 Tavistock St., Covent Garden WC2E 7PB

Dr David Luke
7.15 for 7.30 start. £5 in advance.

Tonight Dr David Luke looks at the way current neuroscience understands people’s experiences of visionary encounters with discarnate beings. In all times and places people have had profoundly real experiences of deities, demons, angels, elves, aliens, and ghosts. Often these occur when a person is in altered state – dreaming, on drugs, is near death. The connection between the altered state and the ‘visitation’ is explored in a vivid illustrated talk, which takes a tour through folklore, myth, neurochemistry, magic, shamanism, the Luciferian witch cult, brain anatomy, the pineal gland, the Reg Veda, psychoactive toads and a cauldron full of other odd ingredients. A lively slide lecture format followed by discussion.

Dr David Luke is a popular returning speaker at Treadwell’s. He recently completed his PhD at the Centre for the Study of Anomalous Psychological Processes at the University of Northampton, where he is also an occasional visiting lecturer. Northampton is the nation’s most important centre for scholars of parapsychology.

WESTERN OCCULT KABBALAH MEETS JEWISH KABBALAH: Two Traditions in Dialogue
Treadwell's Bookshop, 34 Tavistock St., Covent Garden WC2E 7PB

Daniel Jonas meets Christina Oakley Harrington
7.15 for 7.30 pm start. £5.00 in advance.

Tonight Christina Oakley Harrington meets Daniel Jonas for a discussion/interview evening: Western Occult Kabbalah meets Jewish Kabbalah. The two traditions compare notes on a range of topics – working with the spheres on the tree of life; some issues concerning gematria; correspondences; the two pillars; and what does a kabbalist in each tradition actually do, in terms of activities and meditations. It’s an almost unique chance for non-Jewish Pagans and occultists to learn, from the source, about this path as followed by Orthodox and other traditional Jews, in a language more or less familiar to them. Christina and Daniel promise friendly banter, lots of time for audience questions, a few amusing anecdotes from their respective kabbalistic communities, and lots of thought-provoking information.

Daniel Jonas is not only a practising student of traditional kabbalah, but he is also a Jewish interfaith facilitator, who has (almost uniquely) been involved in Jewish-Pagan interfaith work. Bring an open mind and lots of questions.

Join a ‘Carnival March’ around the airport perimeter to Sipson – the village which would be wiped out by a 3rd runway.
Help make a giant ‘NO’ and join the fun at the festival in Sipson village.

On Monday 25th February there was an indoor Rally against Heathrow expansion in the Central Hall, Westminster, with around 3,000 attending (a second Hall had to be used). This was after many local meetings around West London up to a thousand strong. The movement against the Third Runway at Heathrow is gathering pace… and snowballing exponentially…

This is not just about Heathrow, this is about drawing a line in the sand against big investment decisions that are locking us into a headlong plummet into climate catastrophe. The huge expansion in aviation, of which the Heathrow expansion is the flagship component, is totally incompatible with winning the battle against climate catastrophe, totally incompatible in fact, with the Government’s own Climate Bill.

This is a battle we need to win – and a battle we can win! We want to see people coming from all over the country to join the tens of thousands who will be protesting in West London. We want a massive show of force to make sure we win our first big victory in the war to redirect Britain towards a low carbon future. Come and be part of it – join a Spring Carnival of Resistance to the Third Runway, Airport Expansion and the insanity of government decisions that would lock us into climate catastrophe.

We can stop the third runway! We will stop the third runway!
