GRIMOIRES: Lecture followed by Party hosted by Oxford University Press
Treadwell's Bookshop, 34 Tavistock St., Covent Garden WC2E 7PB

Professor Owen Davies (University of Hertfordshire)
7.15 for a 7.30 start. £5. Launch party from 8.30 pm, free - hosted by Oxford University Press.

Professor Owen Davies speaks on the subject of his new book, Grimoires. He made his name as the author of the seminal study of cunning men and women: published first as Cunning Folk, reprinted as Popular Magic. Eagerly awaited, Grimoires is the first academic overview of this textual genre. It is set off with a lecture, followed by a party. The lecture will be on one aspect of the grimoire tradition, from his latest research. Oxford University Press, the publisher, hosts the launch bash after the lecture. Owen Davies is Professor of Social History at the University of Hertfordshire. Much of his work has concerned the continued wides pread belief in witchcraft and magic in the modern period, and why witchcraft accusations eventually declined in England during the early twentieth century. This has also led to work on popular medicine and folklore, comparative studies regarding France and Scotland, and interdisciplinary research applying anthropological and biomedical knowledge to historical topics. He has spoken at Treadwell's before and we warmly welcome his return.

How to book your place at a Treadwell's event: Ring with card details, as payment confirms your booking: 0207 240 8906. You may also, of course, call by the shop in person or post a cheque. All Treadwell‎’‎s evening talks are followed by a drinks party. We love receiving correspondence: info [at] treadwells-london [dot] com( Email). Our website is here.

Friday 5 June 2009
EL TANBURA - Sufi Music
Wesley Memorial Chapel, New Inn Hall Street, Oxford

Celebrating 20 years together, this collective of Port Said poets, fishermen, musicians and dancers mix up an intoxicating brew of Sufi soul music from the old coffee houses and hashish dens of the Nile Delta.

Their music is driven by the seductive call of the Simsimiyya - an ancient lyre dating back to the times of the Pharaohs.

In 1989 a small nucleus of veteran performers came together to form the El Tanbura group. They were laughed at initially, but the infectious atmosphere of the performances soon convinced others to join, and the band grew to include not only folk musicians and percussionists but dancers and singers drawn from local fishermen, market traders and builders, alongside older master instrumentalists.

Performances today feature seductive simsimiyya melodies, Sufi inspired vocal chants, increasingly intense drumming and bouts of frenzied dancing. Band members dress in an eclectic mix of jellabas, jeans, fez and baseball caps, and enjoy involving their audiences as their rhythms and chants gain in heat and passion.

“magical… it is easy to imagine why Simsimiyya players were employed on ships to charm the winds” ***** - Songlines

FULGUR BOOK LAUNCH
Treadwell's Bookshop, 34 Tavistock St., Covent Garden WC2E 7PB

Robert Ansell & Fulgur
7.15 for 7.30 start, free but reservation on guest list is required

Fulgur invites you to the launch of its new author, Australian magical artist Barry Hale, and his book Legion 49. The publisher describes it thus: "[in this] series of short, de-constructionist essays, the artist explores traditional methods of evocation and the myths surrounding Beelzebub, before providing an iconographical and sigillic recension of his horde of forty-nine servitors, glimpsed through the protective-symmetry of the paper-cut traditions of old Mexico. Legion 49 is a fusion of styles, influences and approaches, the modern and ancient, direct and indirect, refined and raw: it seeks to capture for a moment that flitting, fleeting, Chaotic gnosis symbolised by the Lord of Flies." Special launch copies of the standard edition will be on sale on the night: limited to 777 numbered copies. Illustrations, gilt-stamped cloth and dust-jacket. 160pages, 230m m x 175mm. £25.00. You can reserve a launch copy by contacting the shop when you RSVP.

Fulgur parties at Treadwell's have a somewhat outrageously wonderful life of their own - and often go on late into the night at nearby after-hours clubs. Do join in! Barry will be here to sign copies and there are rumours he might do an impromptu performance - we have a feeling this will be another of those surreal nights. Capacity is limited, so be sure to reserve a spot simply by sending a short email with the names attending.

How to book your place at a Treadwell's event: Ring with card details, as payment confirms your booking: 020 7240 8906. You may also, of course, call by the shop in person or post a cheque. TRANSMITTING THE FIRE: Initiation in the Work of Kenneth Grant
Treadwell's Bookshop, 34 Tavistock St., Covent Garden WC2E 7PB

Michael Staley of the Typhonian Order
7.15 for a 7.30 start. £5.

This is the fourth lecture in a series about the work of British occultist Kenneth Grant (b. 1924), whose Typhonian thelema has been an important strand of western magic since the 1950s. This evening focusses on his concepts of initiation. Initiation is fundamental transformation, moving beyond the distinction between “inner” and “outer”; in Thelema, it is the discovery of the True Will, a dynamic realisation which transforms not only the initiate but more crucially their relationship with the universe. The speaker Michael Staley, who has been a member of the Typhonian Order for over thirty years, will also be sharing some reflections upon his own initiatory experiences. Michael Staley is the editor and publisher of Starfire, an occasional Thelemic journal which first appeared in 1986. He founded Starfire Publishing, which publishes Kenneth Grant.

DRUIDS AND THEIR MAGIC IN EARLY IRELAND: Clouds, Stars and Broken Dreams
Treadwell's Bookshop, 34 Tavistock St., Covent Garden WC2E 7PB

Dr Mark Williams (University of Cambridge)
7.15 for a 7.30 start. £5.

Druids appear frequently in the rich saga literature of Early Ireland, engaged in a variety of eerie magical practices: clairvoyance, psychometry, cloud-divination, shape-shifting, and going into prophetic trances wrapped in the dripping hides of freshly-slaughtered bulls. And yet these actions, superficially so powerfully redolent of the pagan past, occur within literary texts which are products of a profoundly Christian, Bible-saturated medieval culture. How did early Irish monk-authors envision the magic of their one-time rivals, the druids, and why on earth was imagining pagan magic of any interest for these 'saints and scholars'? Mark Williams of the University of Cambridge attempts to provide some answers.

How to book your place at a Treadwell's event: Ring with card details, as payment confirms your booking: 020 7240 8906. You may also, of course, call by the shop in person or post a cheque. All Treadwell‎’‎s evening talks are followed by a drinks party. We love receiving correspondence: info [at] treadwells-london [dot] com( Email). Our website is here.

Thursday 18 June 2009
SOLSTICE SUITE - World Premiere
Sheldonian Theatre, Oxford

In a concert that promises to be a highlight of Oxford's musical calendar, the Oxford University Big Band will be joined by virtuoso trumpeter and composer Mark Armstrong for the world premiere of his Solstice Suite. The suite is an exciting exploration of the mysticism and traditions associated with the solstice, including settings of John Donne's metaphysical poetry for female voice.

Mark Armstrong is one of the most versatile and sought-after musicians in Britain today. His bold and innovative compositions can be heard with the BBC Big Band, Ronnie Scott's Big Band and the National Youth Jazz Orchestra. A regular member of Stan Tracey's octet, Clark Tracey's quintet and the Clare Teal band, Mark is a previous winner of the BBC Big Band arranger's prize.

This piece is a journey from solstice to solstice in the British calendar, referring to traditional and later modes of spirituality and drawing parallels between them. Musically the modal language moves from light (Lydian) to dark (Locrian/Phrygian) as the days draw shorter. It contrasts two poems by the metaphysical poet John Donne to illustrate this.

  • 1st movement: St John's Fire - midsummer. St John’s Fire refers to old English ritual of bonfires and wakefires during a vigil in honour of St John, for whom the feast day falls at midsummer, though this festival is of pagan origin. In the text (The Sunne Rising) Donne complains (after Ovid) that the sun interrupts his lovemaking, and that the sun should shine on him and his lover.
  • 2nd movement: Autumn Storm - autumn. A storm followed by a nostalgic Indian summer. The year is growing older.
  • 3rd movement: The Hunt - this represents a sort of hunting down and sacrifice of the old year, from Hallowe’en to midwinter (Yule).
  • 4th movement: Solstice - midwinter solstice. The text (A Nocturne On St Lucy’s Day) refers to Donne’s grief at the loss of a lover, and his distillation into the “quintessence of nothingness” as a result. However the seeds of rebirth are hinted at in the text and in the pentatonic motif, which represents Venus. The recapitulation of the initial Solstice theme represents rebirth, from the standpoint of Newgrange Neolithic tomb, where the light of Venus, cast on a stone wall, is replaced by the light of the reborn midwinter sun.

'Armstrong is the solo star of the outfit ... scorching' - The Guardian

The flagship jazz ensemble of the university, OUBB is recognised as the finest ensemble of its type in the country. A reputation for dynamic and professional performances has led the band to Delhi, Mumbai, and the Montreux Jazz Festival. This summer, OUBB will perform the Solstice Suite in Rotterdam at the world's largest jazz festival.

'It was sheer joy listening to the ensemble - a show worth watching' - The Times of India

Mark Armstrong - trumpet/composer
Tanzil Rahman - musical director

EMBODIED MAGICK: Prefigurations in the Flesh
Treadwell's Bookshop, 34 Tavistock St., Covent Garden WC2E 7PB

An Intensive Day of Workings with Orryelle Defenestrate Bascule
11.00 start. Day ends 5.30 pm. £65.

"Magick is about manipulation of energy and an energized body is the sorcerer's most powerful tool, allowing enactment of mental and astral concepts and prefigurations in the flesh." In this day of bodyworkings, Orryelle dives into the realm of intense physicality. His own developments have come out of studies of techniques from kundalini yoga, Butoh dance, Suzuki physical theatre, pranayama, Sufi drum-breath, dervish dancing, seidr/Seething, harmonic chanting and sekhem. He shares his explorations of combining these various methods, and give participants an experience of why he believes magic must be based in the physical to be earthed. This workshop is very practical yet contains theoretical grounding. No foreknowledge of any of the techniques or methods involved is required (although a very basic bodily fitness is necessary, i.e. no heart problems etc.) Those familiar with aspects of some of them can still be assured they will be propelled into new spaces by their combination and magickal application. Gnosis awaits. Orryelle Defenestrate Bascule is one of our era's most prolific and diverse magical practitioners, one of the few who can be said to be on the cutting edge. His visual art is published now by Fulgur Ltd (Conjunctio, 2008). Also a performance artist, he has done shows in several countries, and his striking semi-public magical workings have made a mark on contemporary occult culture. Orryelle is in the UK for a short time only, and places are strictly limited (13 maximum), so early booking advised.

BOOKING: Please book in advance via info [at] treadwells-london [dot] com( email) or Tel. +44 (0)20 7240 8906 or via Skype at treadwells-london. Map on our website.

THE BOOK OF ENGLISH MAGIC: Launch Party
Treadwell's Bookshop, 34 Tavistock St., Covent Garden WC2E 7PB

Philip Carr-Gomm and Richard Heygate's book with John Murray Publishers
From 7.00 pm. Speeches at about 7.30. Free but advance booking required.

Once in a blue moon a book comes out that you get a feeling is going to be a classic. Within minutes of receiving an advance copy, the Treadwell's staff all got that prickly feeling on the back of the neck. ... This is a big book, a real door-stopper. Yet, it's an introductory volume to magic in England: part history, part practical, part resource guide, part theory. Illustrated, filled with interviews with practitioners and experts, it is the kind of book that an intelligent novice (and intermediate practitioner) dreams of. The two authors spoke with many of the most senior people in the British magical community, whose commentaries are interspersed through the book, giving a personal touch to guide the reader. Druidry, wicca, Anglo-Saxon runes, John Dee, Golden Dawn - all in their English setting. It includes short personal essays from Vivianne Crowley, Stephen Skinner, Caitlin Matthews, Robin Cousins and a host of others, including Treadwell's own Christina Oakley Harrington. And, we are a little chuffed to say, the book starts out with a scene (and a photo) of Treadwell's Bookshop.

The launch party is free to everyone, but advance booking essential. Just drop an RSVP email to Treadwell's. Ask if you would like Treadwell's to reserve your launch copy for collection on the night - the authors will be signing copies and giving a short speech. 562 pages, hardback. £25.00.
