Thursday 3 September 2009 and following fortnightly 3 Thursdays
CINEMA OF THE OCCULT: Four nights of Witches, Demons, Transhumans and Cinesexuality
Treadwell's Bookshop, 34 Tavistock St., Covent Garden WC2E 7PB

Professor Patricia MacCormack (Anglia Ruskin)
7.15 for 7.30. £32 the series or £10 individually.

Occultism has a key relationship with film and was part of the inception of cinema: spectators, with their dreams and fantasies, entered into Faustian pacts with the enigmatic plane of the screen and its magickal intensities. Its spell continues to this day, with the screen continuing to open up for us other worlds and planes of intensity. This series will entertain and challenge you, we promise. Professor MacCormack's film lectures earlier this year were fantastically popular, and she returns at the request of many of those who attended. She will bring some rarer examples along with fresh considerations of some of the classics. Above all, she will be bringing theoretical and philosophical critiques, and will be inviting the audience to see them in a new way. Each session concludes with a wine party. Patricia MacCormack is Professor in Communication and Film at Anglia Ruskin University; she works and has published extensively in continental philosophy, cinesexuality, post-human ethics, chaos magic, sexuality and occult culture. Dates are Thursdays: 3 Sept, 17 Sept, 1 Oct, 15 Oct. The occult goes to the movies....

Monday 7 September and following 3 Mondays
LEARNING THE RUNES: Intensive Introductory Rune Course
Treadwell's Bookshop, 34 Tavistock St., Covent Garden WC2E 7PB

Katie Gerrard
7pm-9pm. £65, registering with the tutor directly.

Focusing on the Elder Futhark this course seeks to introduce you to the history and use of Rune stones and show you how to learn and work with runic energies for spellcraft and divinatory purposes.
Session One introduces you to the Runes and their history. We will discuss the known uses of the Elder Futhark in Scandinavian and Germanic literature, discussing suggested uses. We will also look at the popularisation of runes in recent history and their uses for divination and galdra today.
Session Two: work with the energies of the Runes, intoning and chanting, how each rune makes us feel and what clues this can give us to their meaning and usage. Focusing on several specific runes we will look at the symbolism and mythology associated with them and look at what steps we can take to get to know that rune better. We will also look at many of the runes that can be used within galdra and spellcraft and how we can use them.
Session Three: This week we will be making our own set of runes using materials gathered by you or provided on the day. We will discuss what decisions to make when selecting materials as well as how to charge your set with your own energy and with the energy of the rune.
Session Four: In the final session we will look at using your set of runes for divination. We will also explore how runes can be used as talismans or as sigils within spellcraft. This session will also give us time to discuss the things we have learnt and experienced throughout the course.
Tutor: Katie Gerrard has been working with Runic and Norse practices for over ten years and has given workshops and lectures to pagan audiences in London since 2003. Due to the intensive nature of this course, places are limited. Register direct with Katie Gerrard by katiegerrard [at] thebirchtree [dot] com( email). £65 per person which includes four two-hour sessions complete with course notes and any provided materials you use to make your runes.

Monday 7 to Friday 11 September 2009
THE WAY OF CONTEMPLATION: An exploration of Medieval Ways and Byways
Coach trip starting Clifton Hampden, Oxfordshire

Jupiter Trust Pilgrimage 2009 travelling to Cambridge, Norwich, Walshingham and Ely.

Two continuing threads weave through our Pilgrimage Journey in 2009. Firstly, we will travel through East Anglia with an awareness of a great mythical tradition - subtly understood and given expression by writers and artists such as William Blake and Samuel Palmer - of the English landscape as a unique and sacred thing, at whose heart lies a mystical connection between Nature, Man and the Divine.

Running parallel with this tradition is the concept of England as "The Dowry of Mary", a title arising from the extensive devotion to Our Lady found in England before the Reformation. In Walshingham ("England's Nazareth"), the vision of our Lady given to the Lady Richeldis gave birth to a Shrine intended to re-create the Holy House on English soil, with all that this implies; very little seems to have changed since medieval times in this curious little East Anglian town, about which so many books, poems and songs have been written - now, since the 19th century, a location for a great revival in pilgrimage.

East Anglia was home in early times to many saints, shrines, sanctuaries and mystics, unique among whom is of course Julian of Norwich. Today we find great meaning and significance in the ability of Julian to stay true to her own visions, whilst walking in harmony with the established orders of the time. Her focus on the loving nature of God, and her unique spiritual path perhaps explains the resonance we feel with her teaching in our own times, as we seek validity for a new way in which to honour all spiritual traditions equally - a vision costing, as T.S. Eliot also said, "not less than everything".

"And all shall be well and
All manner of thing shall be well
When the tongues of flame are in-folded
Into the crowned knot of fire
And the fire and the rose are one"
T.S. Eliot Four Quartets

Wednesday 9 September 2009
ALCHEMY'S HERMES: Mercury, God of Alchemy
Treadwell's Bookshop, 34 Tavistock St., Covent Garden WC2E 7PB

A Lecture by Paul Cowlan
7.15 for 7.30 start. £5.

Paul Cowlan, who has worked with spiritual alchemy for over twenty years, will outline the significance of Hermes/Mercury in alchemical thinking, providing an overall view of this central concept. If alchemy has a patron deity it is Hermes, god of riddles, tricks and secrets; or as the Romans called him, Mercury; tutelary wheeler-dealer deity of trade, thieves and market places. The arch illusionist, the ultimate Tricky-Dicky, the fluid that is really a metal but behaves like a liquid. But also the spiritual essence, the divine messenger, the psychopomp, the guide of souls, the only one who can lead you safely through the darkness of psychological dissolution; because he himself will certainly be a part of that dissolution. Now you see him, now you don't. Mercury is all these things, and many more. Paul doesn't promise to tame the mutant spirit of Mercurius, or bring him to you in a bottle, but he will certainly provide you with glimpses which will make Apollo's mischievous brother a little easier to comprehend. Paul Cowlan is a longstanding practitioner of spiritual alchemy, and brings over 20 years experience to his talks. This is his sixth year at Treadwell’s – he returns by popular demand.

Friday 11 September 2009
SOME SECRET PLACE: Pagan Ceremony Evening
Treadwell's Bookshop, 34 Tavistock St., Covent Garden WC2E 7PB

Gemma Jones, Peter James and Friends
7.15 for 7.30 start. £5 in advance.

Monthly beginner's pagan ritual evenings, perfect for those starting out on the pagan path, or as solitary witches. Some Secret Place is made up of some talk, some small group discussion on devotion, ceremony, spirituality, and relationship with deity. Most of all, though, it is experiential. It's about doing and feeling rather than theorising. We hope that people who come along will deepen their personal relationship with the pagan gods. This is for people who have done some reading on witchcraft, Wicca and/or paganism, and who are familiar with at least its general theological tenets. We assume you are pagan and want to practice it, but we don't presume you are experienced. Group size is small - maximum 17 people. The organisers want this to be a gentle, intimate and thoughtful experience. You can come once, come regularly, or come intermittently - whatever suits you best. Future dates: Friday, 9 Oct, Friday 13 Nov.

To sign up for an event, ring with card details, 020 7240 8906. Payment in person to the shop in opening hours also welcome. All evening talks are followed by drinks. info [at] treadwells-london [dot] com( Email). More events and shop info on Website.

THE CASTLE OF THE EGG and other tales
Aust Church, Gloucestershire

misericordia with Clive Fairweather
8pm
The noble houses of mediaeval Europe were lavish patrons of the arts, but difficult employers. Jean Froissart grew impatient with the self-indulgent Guy de Blois and Geoffrey Chaucer's annuity from John of Gaunt brought complications. Misericordia provides music to illuminate four authentic tales illustrating the pitfalls of 14th century courtly entertainment.

LIVING IN LOVE AND HONOUR
EarthSpirit, near Glastonbury, Somerset

An exploration of the true relationship between man and woman led by Karen Webb and Peter Neall.
(For Network members here are links to their Member Profiles: Karen and Peter.)

Our generation has done much vital exploration in men’s and women’s groups, and now we see it is time for men and women to come together again, to honour and empower one another with the learning they’ve gained.

Drawing often on the Western mystical tradition embodied by the troubadours of the Middle Ages, on Arthurian myth and wisdom tales, and embracing modern scientific discoveries, in largely ritual space we approach one another with integrity and enquiry as Man and Woman.

  • What is Woman, and what is Womanhood?
  • What is Man, and what is Manhood?
  • What is the deep spiritual nature of the relationship between Woman and Man?
  • What do we truly want to receive from one another, and to give?
  • How can we stand freely in our own power, honouring and complemented by another standing freely in their own, very different, power?
  • How do we honour our own inner Man and Woman, and heal the relationship within?

This is not for couples necessarily, nor only for heterosexuals. We are all man (and woman), or woman (and man). Limited to 20 participants.

Contact and further information see website or 01525 222600.

Cost £235 inclusive for 3 days residential. Camping and non-resident, please contact for reduced prices.

WITCH BOTTLES, POPPETS, WAX AND STRING: An Illustrated Slide Lecture on Folk Magic
Treadwell's Bookshop, 34 Tavistock St., Covent Garden WC2E 7PB

Lily Moss
£5.00. 7.15 for 7.30 start.

The artefacts and texts of folk magic are weirdly compelling; this engaging illustrated lecture will give you untold new frontiers of knowledge of the cunning arts: What should you do if you find a wax doll with pin s stuck in it? Why should you put shoes under your door foundations? When should you pour wax into your daughter’s gloves? Under what circumstances would you tell your next door neighbour to piss in a bottle? Lily Moss gives a vivid and lively introduction to European folk magic's outer reaches: spells, charms, talismans and well, the odd stuff that made up common knowledge as well as the more abstruse arcana of the cunning men and women. This is a night for everyone who wishes they knew a little more about 'old-style' witchcraft. The speaker is a passionate collector of folk charms and spells, and loves all things pagan. She is a literature student at the University of London and an award winning photographer who has exhibited worldwide. She is also one half of Wood-Moss Herbals.

Friday 25 September 2009
MEETING RUNE MISRESS FREYA ASWYNN: Life with Odin, the Volvas and Rune Magic
Treadwell's Bookshop, 34 Tavistock St., Covent Garden WC2E 7PB

7.15 for 7.30 start. £5.00.

Freya Aswynn is a key figure in the la test renaissance in rune magic and germanic-inspired mystery practices. She shot to fame with the publication of The Leaves of Yggdrasil and her debut album Fruits of Yggdrasil in the late 1980s. Through the 1990s, living in London, she developed and disseminated her work with a tenacity that took the whole of Britain by storm. She published and worked experientially in a potent, individualised practice of female-empowered Asatru. Few people, indeed few female magicians of any era, can have been as influential as she was on the preoccupations of a community. In some sense, one could say she has been to the Runes what Timothy Leary was to LSD. Freya Aswynn now lives in Spain, but is back in the UK briefly, during which time she will be appearing at Treadwell's for one night only. Those who have met her will know she emanates pride, intensity, intelligence and utter conviction. Tonight she is interviewed by Christina Oakley Harrington, who invites her to talk about her vision of the runes, her feelings about female magical power, and about the values of her spiritual path. Questions from the audience will be taken too, at this rare audience with a living legend. Book early as places are even more limited than usual.

Note: this interview may be filmed; audience members will not appear, and there should be little or no disruption.

To sign up for an event, ring with card details, 020 7240 8906. Payment in person to the shop in opening hours also welcome. All evening talks are followed by drinks. info [at] treadwells-london [dot] com( Email). More events and shop info on Website.
