Paganism is one of the world's fastest-growing religions, practiced in a huge variety of ways. The Paganism Reader provides a definitive collection of key sources in Paganism, ranging from its ancient origins to its 20th century reconstruction and revival. Chronologically organised sections include extracts from ancient Greek, Norse and Celtic literature, inspirational texts from the early twentieth century, writings by leaders of the Pagan revival, and newer perspectives showing the diversity of Paganism today. Witchcraft, nature religion, shamanism and goddess worship are considered, as is the influence of environmental and feminist movements. Fully introduced, with editors' prefaces to all extracts and suggestions for further reading, this comprehensive book is an invaluable guide to Paganism and critical issues in its study.
Review
The Paganism Reader is a book that looks at Paganism through a number of different writings, from a small selection of Classical texts through to recent articles and book excerpts. Included are both fiction and non fiction works along with a short description of the piece and it's role in the development of Neo-Paganism.
The overall effect of the book is to introduce the reader to a wide range of voices which have helped shape this modern spiritual path. There are invitations for further discovery throughout, in the form of cross-references and bibliographies for the various pieces.
This is not a Pop! Goes the Witch type of book, but rather a scholarly introduction to modern Pagan thought. It draws lines of connection between the many sources of Neo-Pagan relgious thought and culture in a way which is useful for both Pagans and non-Pagans seeking to learn more about this fast-growing faith community
