These prayers, verses and invocations are drawn from many faiths and many nations but they all reflect the same mystery: the mystery of our passage from birth, through life, to death. We are born from the unknown. Our life, except perhaps to our friends and family, is a secret journey of joy and sorrow. Our death is shrouded in questions. In the words of St Paul, "now we see through a glass darkly..." But we do see some things, if we respond to the spirit within. Most faiths, personal or communal, acknowledge the inspiration of the spiritual life founded on truth, love and compassion. This anthology is a small reflection of the inspired and enlightening words that have been passed on down the centuries, throughout the world. They sing to the child within us all, to the spirit which always remains open and free and clear-sighted. In the words of Master Eckhart: "The eye with which I see God is the same eye with which God sees me." Each reflection is stunningly illustrated in full colour, making this an ideal gift book for the young and anyone starting on the spiritual journey, or seeking images and verses for inspiration and meditation. A map and short introduction to the world religions, along with notes on sources, make it a useful addition to all libraries in homes and schools
Review
Sumptuously bound in gold hardback and beautifully illustrated, this is, as the title suggests, a collection of religious poems and prayers from cultures and faiths throughout the world.
The book focuses, as one would expect, on the ‘established' monotheistic religions - Christianity, Islam and Judaism - but there are also contributions from Hinduism and Buddhism as well as less widespread paths such as Sikhism, Taoism and Shinto.
Whilst clearly not pagan in content or inspiration, his book offers a beautiful and poetic insight to other forms of faith practiced around the world. The gentle power of the words, and the exquisite illustrations make this book one that can be picked up when seeking a new or different perspective to events in our levels - or can be opened at random simply to enjoy!
