Any book that claims to be channelled is likely to make me flinch
from the outset, and this book is no exception. For someone studying Druidry, or any earth-based religious tradition, the work of listening to trees, hearing their natural communication, and responding with appropriate respect is fundamental to daily study and practice. It is our role to learn languages of the non-human world, in order to understand how to live more honourably and sustainably.
Anyone who feels it is special to talk to trees (and so special that
a book must be published of their conversations) is, I have to say,
liable to be ridiculed. Nature Spirits is a series of 'interviews',
with the author talking to 'spirits' of various trees. I am just not
able to take it seriously. The London plane spirit that speaks to
her calls himself Frank.
However, there is another way of reading this book. As a blend of
children's story (fairy stories for the very young), poetry (Betjeman-style naivety with broad romantic sweeps), satire (laughing at our own human nature and how we project upon the world around us) and field guide (some gentle observations of tree nature and landscape), it almost works. Almost.
