Review

How you fare with this book may well come down to how tolerant you are of surprising juxtapositions and whether you are comfortable with ambiguity. Clarke is a psychologist and therapist, at ease using the language of psychology and science. She's also a distinctly spiritual Christian with an interest in Mediaeval writings.

The book explores the themes offered in the title - the relationship between madness and spirituality, using psychological tools to talk about how we relate to reality and what happens when that relationship breaks down. Clarke explores how we think, and why, and what that might imply about the role of spirituality in our lives. She has some very interesting things to say about relationship and the web of existence. There are more questions here than answers, but that's rather in the nature of the subject matter. Those answers and speculations Clarke offers are intriguing,

It's an intense, provocative read, and I imagine there are plenty of people who would find it uncomfortable. It may be too spiritual for the rationalists, too analytical for those who want unfettered wonder and magic. For those who have feet in both camps and thrive on both ways of relating to the world, (I'd say that's true of me) its a wonderful read. This is not a Druid book - it is not about Druidry, specifically, but it is about spirituality in the broadest sense. It is a book that offers powerful language and concepts for exploring spiritual experience in a thinking and feeling way. It's one of those books I think everyone ought to read.
