Nitmiluk - Katherine Gorge

This is Katherine Gorge, in Nitmiluk National Park, in the Northern Territory, Australia. It is millions of years old and home to the Jawoyn people.
I visited the gorge last year in the dry season (the only time you can really cruise through there without getting swept away!) and I was overcome with a sense of the sacred. This place has seen so much of time, humanity and spirit and yet it still stands, relatively untouched by the modern world. There are simply no words that can describe what you see and feel as you glide down the river, but if you listen carefully, the gorge and its spirits will tell you their story.
While I live many thousands of kilometres away from Katherine Gorge, it is permanantly etched in my mind and on my soul. I also came away with a new understanding and appreciation for the indigenous peoples of Katherine. I can only imagine what it must feel like to have such a deep and far reaching connection to one place.
It was truly sad to leave.
