Project Area:

The IWC are in talks to propose a scheme which they claim will help the conservation of whales.  The BBC article can be found here:- http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/8726319.stm

Protests are being held outside the offices where the talks are being held in Morrocco.  Some believe that this condones whaling rather than having a few countries outside the agreement who are legally allowed to go whaling. Countries such as Japan, may be stopped in their hunting in the Southern Ocean without this agreement.

Others believe that this is a positive step forward, bringing countries such as Norway and Iceland in line over time, and may help to end with Japan's claim for whaling under "scientific purposes".

 Update

The deadlock remains, as Iceland, Norway and Japan could not agree to the quotas suggested. Full article can be found here:- http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2010/06/100625-whaling-whales-ban-iwc-japan-hunting
