Duir
Oak as Ally
Duir is the grandmother/grandfather of the landscape, the figure of authority who stands at the doorway to each new path of life. He inspires us to find the courage to lead, the generosity to be wholly connected within our tribe, always challenging us as to how truly we are living with honour. The oak gives so much, providing an environment for more creatures than any other tree in the British Isles; so does he guide us to care, to perceive what we need and what is the greater need. With such ancient forebears, young oaks teach us to hope and aspire to be all that we can be. (ERO)

There are many different species of Oak around the world, with only English Oak (Quercus robus) and Sessile oak (Quercus petraea) native to the British Isles. Familiar to just about everyone, it grows quickly when young but can live for 700 years or more. Oak teaches us of strength and courage, of endurance and self-determination. However, we should also beware of becoming entrenched in our view, resisting flexibility which may result in us breaking through stubbornness when the violent storms of nature engulf us. (CC)
