[A] ZAYTOUN OLIVE
OIL (http://zaytoun.org/)
Zaytoun is a uk based Non-Profit project to purchase pesticide free Extra
Virgin Olive Oil from Palestinian farmers at Fair Trade prices. Olive
oil is
the backbone of the Palestinian agricultural economy with some 65%
of
Palestinians connected to agriculture. It is estimated that 75% of
palestinians live in poverty, however, over half of the country's Olive
harvest goes unsold and spoils. Since the start of the 2000 Intifada,
farmers bringing in the Olive harvest face severe difficulties arising
from
the millitary closure of their land and violence from the settlers
which has
led to Palestinian Farmers risking their lives in order to pick their
olives. The apartheid wall has further exasberated the Situation. Also,
under Israeli law if land is left untended for three years it can be
siezed
by the Israeli state.
You can buy Zaytoun Olive Oil at outlets in: Bristol, Cambridge, Cardiff,
East Anglia, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leamington Spa, London, Ludlow, Manchester,
Nottingham, Oxford, Winchester and York. See web-site for details.

[D] THE FREEDOM: SHADOWS AND HALLUCINATIONS IN OCCUPIED IRAQ
by Christian Parenti, The New Press, 2004. £12.99 RRP but see below.
'The perfect guide through occupied Iraq: honest, compassionate, and
pissed
off' (Naomi Klein, author of No Logo)
'Every war produces a couple of iconic books: Dispatches did Vietnam;
The
Freedom does Iraq. This is raw, illumination-round writing to contradict
the
official briefings; a parallel snapshot of the new troupe of war junkies,
heroes, the humble and the humiliated, the car bombs, the combatm the
gonzo
convulsions of survival, the fear and terror. All delivered with compassion
for the victims, be they shot or the shooters' (Tim Page, legendary
war
photographer)
Rather than try to provide a 'sweeping analysis' of the war, Parenti
instead
gives us 'a slice of political feeling and flavor, a snapshot of a
time and
place: Iraq during the first year of US occupation.' Here - whether
he's
hanging out with US soldiers, meeting members of the Iraqi resistance
or
interviewing the daughter of an Iraqi caught up in the occupation's
capricious system of mass detention - he succeeds brilliantly. A must-read.
Voices' friends can get The Freedom for a special discounted price
of £10.99
by sending a cheque for that amount (payable to 'Thomson Publishing
Services') to Thomson Publishing Services, Cheriton House, North Way,
SP10 5BE and
quoting reference IOC-1.
