The Environment

Sulpher Caps?

Welcome to the Druid Network Environment pages. Here you will find information relating to the wider issues surrounding the Environment outside the home. The information here is intended to inspire, inform and challenge you to think about the environment. How it is sacred. All of it. How we treat it as humans, both well and badly. How we relate to it. How it is a part of us and we are a part of it.

As you browse through these pages you will find  articles, reviews and personal experiences on all aspects of the environment and environmentalism. Just below is our environmental blog/ commentary/editorial that we aim to update regularly, picking up on stories in the news and issues that effect us.

Next door to this section you can find the Ethical Living section that contains collected information, links and suggestions for incorporating your Environmental consciousness into your life.  There are also the Environmental Projects pages where you can find details of how the Druid Network its self is getting involved. Our weblinks page contains a few links to many of the other organisations acting in the environmental sector.

23rd November 2007 - Committed to the Environment

Let me present A simple series of events for you, in chronological order, that seem to show just how serious our politicians are about climate change...

First there is the recent announcement from the IPCC saying that the world is warming as a result of human activity and we need to do something about it...
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/7098902.stm

Then comes Gordon Browns first big speech on the environment as Prime Minister of the UK, outlining just what the government is prepared to do and how seriously it takes the issue of climate change...
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/7101075.stm

Finally comes the announcement that Heathrow airport is to get its new, third runway...
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/7106524.stm

So, yet again our politicians nod their heads to the environmental lobbies to gather votes and be seen to be doing something, as long as big business can continue to expand and pollute at will, all in the name of economic growth. Nice.

25th September 2007 - Dramatic reduction in artic sea ice.

I noticed a couple of stories of interest on the BBC news web site today. One outlining the rather dramatic reduction in sea ice in the artic, and the other an update on our politicians doing a great deal of talking without committing to anything. A nice indicator of how seriously our leaders take this issue is the comment that George Bush did not attend the current UN talks on climate change, but joined the delegates later for dinner.

5th September 2007 - An end to set aside subsidies for farmers

The beginning of this month saw the end of set aside subsidies to farmers leading to fears that the wildlife that accidentally found its habitat preserved may now be in danger.

Environment Competition Winners!

A big thank you to all who have entered our Poetry and Photo competitions over the past few months. The standard has been very high and our judging panel has had a hard time deliberating to come up with our winners.

The winner of the 2007 environment poetry competition was Autumnsong with the poem "Fixation" the runners up were George Nicholas with "Lake of Memories" and "Isis, Nuit, Sol and the OX" by Nabarz.

Fixation

By Autumn Song

Immense power, annunciation
Better than goth
Flowing
Veins and candlelight mingling
Twinkling into heavenly stars
Delicate dawns of ages gone by
Visions and starlight echoing

Mimic cynic clinical adversary
Heathenry and blasphemy and continuity
Mother daughter and holy spirit
Feed from softly silkened silence
Where freedom is everything to lose

In a morning's hope, a soul song

Beats shock my brain in blasts

Silvery frangipani vagabond ghost
Floating on brain waves of elysium
Aphrodite beckoning

Deepness enveloping shadows sing
And the light draws it all away
Left in the brilliance of autumn and wildings

Hear me, I am calling

The Winner of the 2007 environment photo competition was L Bridy with the picture "Beautiful Yew". The runners up were Bish with "Constantine Bay" and Star with "Back yard Bumble."
