Mobile phones are designed to last 5 years but mobile companies offer upgrades every year to stay competitive and keep their customers. Over 100 million mobile phones are thrown away each year – 80% of which are not recycled. No other electronic device is upgraded this regularly.
One company has seen through this nonsense and is offering something different… they are called Green Mobile and they claim to be the first environmentally friendly phone package.
It has been launched in the UK to help ‘green’ charities like the Woodland Trust and Friends of the Earth. If you join green mobile you agree to hold on to your existing handset for just one more year, and in return you get £25 cash back and they donate £25 to either the Woodland Trust or Friends of the Earth. Each month 6% of your bill goes to the charity you have chosen to support. After 12 months if you keep your handset for another year, green mobile gives you another £25 and donates another £25 to a green charity. Green mobile uses the T Mobile network which Ethical Consumer gave an ethiscore of 10. (see
www.ethiscore.org for the full report on mobile phone networks)
You can also change your landline and broadband over to green mobile and it will donate 6% of your bill each month to the charity of your choice.
