Well no, of course not, but within the horror of the manufacture of arms and trading arms things could be improved. Oxfam and the Control Arms Group have been successful in engaging people like you, people who care, to lobby their governments to develop a global Arms Trade Treaty. At the United Nations in December 2006, 153 governments voted to start work on an international Arms Trade Treaty. This huge success means that governments are now starting to negotiate to control the arms trade, and this success is a direct result of the campaigning efforts of Control Arms and its supporters - the one million people who signed the Million Faces petition calling for the Arms Trade Treaty. If you took a minute of your life to sign – thank you!
The treaty will create a legally binding, global control to help stop weapons being sold to governments and military organisations who do not respect basic human rights. All we have to do now is make sure the global arms treaty is a good one!
During 2007, governments around the world are being asked their opinions on the Arms Trade Treaty by the United Nations' Secretary General, Ban Ki Moon.
Please take two minutes to add your voice. Oxfam have it all set up: just click this link http://www.oxfam.org.uk/applications/blogs/control_arms/?ito=2439&itc=0
Let Ban Ki Moon know that we are all aware of the thousands killed each day as a result of armed violence, and to end the suffering caused by irresponsible arms transfers. The Arms Treaty should include references to human rights, international law and sustainable development.
Also on the Oxfam website you can add your signature to the Million Faces petition. If you would like more information on the control arms group click here: www.controlarms.org/peoples-consultation/index.htm
Thank you for taking the time to do this.
May there be peace /|\
