Oceania Ethics Pages

Organics

Welcome to the Oceania Organics Page. The intention of this page is really two fold. Firstly, to provide information on organic food and diets in general, and secondly, to provide information (and links) specific to growing organic food in this area.

The success of this page is really dependant on interest, so if you have any information on organic diets, or even some organic gardening tips, that you would like to share, please send them our way.

We hope, eventually, to create a resource here for anybody considering how they might begin (or learn more about), eating organic, or growing their own food.

General Organic Information

We are still looking for information here, particularly from interested readers with a bit more knowledge about the subject.

Some very basic resources include;

Greenpeace’s True Food Guide

This guide provides information on how to shop for GM free foods in Australia and New Zealand. The information in the guide is based on the policies of each company, not on actual testing, but it is a useful resource nonetheless. With regard to organic foods, all certified organic products (in Australia, not sure about New Zealand) are required to be GM Free (True Food Guide, May 2002, p. 3).

Silent Spring by Rachel Carson

This book is mentioned here because it is often credited with not only radically transforming the environmental movement, but also with calling into question the real effects of chemicals in our food, and the environment in more general terms. Although it is a bit out of date now (first published 1962), it is still a very informative, and alarming, read.

Organic Growing

Please send us any information you have that could be posted here, and be helpful to others. Two resources that I have found useful are;

  • Peter Bennett, Organic Gardening, 6th Edition, New Holland Publishers, Australia, 2001
    This book is specific to Australia and New Zealand, and is full of great advice for organic gardeners of every level.

Canberra Organic Growers Society (COGS)

Although a lot of the information here is specifically designed for the Canberra region, COGS also provide plenty of great ideas and links that are relevant to all areas. We would love to hear about other similar sites for different regions.
