Burrup Peninsula, Western Australia

Rock art at the BurrupThe Burrup Peninsula (or Murujuga) is a unique ecological, spiritual and archaeological area. It is the world's largest outdoor rock engraving site, containing rock art of world importance possibly dating back to 30,000 years ago - including possibly the first ever representation of the human face in history.

At present, however, Woodside Petroleum and the Western Australian Government are planning to turn part of this site into a natural gas production facility against the wishes of some of the site's Aboriginal custodians and the scientific community.

In an effort to stop this from happening, a world wide campaign to 'stand up for the Burrup' has been launched.

Get Involved

There's plenty of information on the 'Stand up for the Burrup' website about how you can get involved - from all over the world.

There's a list of people to write to, and several petitions to sign.

The most visible part of the campaign, however, is a series of 'stand up' events that have been staged all over the world (and look like the photo of Paris below). There are lots of photos of similar events in the gallery, and if you'd like to be involved in one please check out the international timetable, or better still organise your own!

Help Needed in Europe and the UK

In particular, the organisers would like to stage some stand ups at various (significant) sites around Europe and the UK.

If you would like to organise such an event, or get involved with others who are doing so, please email the Oceania co-ordinator and we can put you in touch with the relevant people.
