Review by Kestrel
This is a very important book. It is
the first attempt by a modern Celtic scholar to bring together significant and fully
annotated translations of 26 of the poems from the Book of Taliesin including
those that are of great importance to anyone who has an interest in Celtic mythology.
Previously we have only had the unreliable nineteenth century translations of
Skene and Davis, the highly imaginative but erroneous work of Gwenogvryn Evans
and the translations of the Matthews whose accuracy has been widely challenged.
The alternative has been to search out articles and translations in often
obscure and difficult-to-find publications, which are not always written in English.
Marged Haycock took a sabbatical
from her job at University of Wales in Aberystwyth to put together all
her previous work on the subject, together with much new material, in one
volume with English translations, for which she should receive much praise!
