Sacred Animals

by Gordon MacLellan
Published by Capall Bann (1997)

Many who follow the path of Druidry follow it in a shamanic manner - seeking connection with the earth beneath them, the plants and trees around them, and with the animals of the land.

This book is an excellent introduction for those seeking to make contact with the power of animals in the Otherworld. It begins by talking of creating a safe and sacred space in which to work within, and then goes through a number of techniques for making contact. Whilst it doesn't give long lists of animal correspondences, it talks of the need to remove all preconceptions and of good preparation.

Once contact has been made it describes many practical ways in which connections can be deepened in working with spirit animals, and of how to open yourself to communication with those animals you come into contact with. There are many practical suggestions and ideas for following the path more deeply still, of creating your own power objects, of working with dance and costume - with others or alone.

Throughout the book the sense of a sacred and meaningful relationship is drawn from the words - a sense of true connection, of the web of life, and of communicating spirit to spirit. This is a beautiful and practical book for those wishing to make connection with Sacred Animals. It is not one to be placed on a bookshelf and referred to occasionally, but a book which needs to be used and worked with as the practical guide it is.
