An attractive book, with lots of maps and photographs – both colour and black-and-white. Covering the whole of Europe, it is, despite its 300-odd pages, necessarily brief involving a considerable degree of authorial choices. Some are idiosyncratic – Liverpool is included, for example, as the home of the Beatles. Others are more what you might expect – Avebury, Glastonbury, Stonehenge are among the nine sites listed for England. For my own home-country of Wales, only St Winifred’s Well in North-East Wales is listed. No surprises here.
For this reason, I found the chapters on other European countries of greater interest. Those covered include:”Central Europe”, “The Low Countries”, and “Eastern Europe” and Scandinavia. The chapters on Ireland, France, Greece, Spain and Italy, contain the most listings.
There are inevitably frustrations and omissions in a book of this nature which aims to cover so much ground, but I did nonetheless find it enjoyable to read through, looking for personal favourites and coming across sites that were new to me. It has inspired me to travel to sites new to me, something that can only be a good thing.
