Who are today’s Druids?

© Neil Pitchford

For a word… a concept… so vastly interpreted it is hard to pin down exactly who the Druids are in the twenty first century. If you don’t know the answer already, asking the question might even produce more confusion than clarity. This is largely because there is no dogma, no authority, no recognised definition of “Druid”, and to be honest we like it that way. We are, if anything, a group of groups of people who do not fit willingly into a category. Does that mean we are undefinable, unquantifiable, unimportant? Not a bit.

In this part of The Druid Network web site, then, we will try to expand on the many and wonderful ways in which people hold the word, be it noun or verb, “Druid”.

We should start with a video, hosted on YouTube and embedded here, made by Dr Larisa A White and Mr Neil Pitchford. This video is part of a presentation given to the Parliament of the World’s Religions in 2021 and sums up the mission of The Druid Network and how Druidry can be practiced as a religion. Much of the presentation refers to Dr White’s book, “World Druidry” (2021), reviewed here.

Of course, with a word so widely, possessively and diversely owned as is DRUID, there are Druids out there who do not share all of the elements we describe at The Druid Network. You only have to reflect briefly to realise other faith groups often experience the same (shall we say?) divisions.

For the sake of both clarity and completeness, here is a short section on those other druids, and those other druidries.
