The Three Worlds

The Three Worlds are those of Land, Sea and Sky. Is acknowledging the Three Worlds a part of your Druid ritual? If so, why?

Kris Hughes : Unlike the majority of neo-pagan rites we do not call routinely on the four elements – they are acknowledged within the stone circle. Instead the powers of the three worlds are sung to: with voice and drum we call and acknowledge the attributions of the three worlds of land, sea and sky.

Emma Restall Orr : In my own rites, I call to the three worlds of land, sea and sky as a way of painting the edges of my circle with honour. In other words, by calling to the spirits of each world in turn, I wake myself (and any with me) to the richness of nature in each realm. At times, these are just the spirits of place, those I see and perceive immediately around me, so I might say, Hail to you, spirits of the wild grasses growing through the rye beneath my feet, spirits of hawthorn, blackthorn, bramble and rose beside me, spirit of the oak that rises above me, roots reaching beneath me, hail, creatures of the dark rich mud, most sacred earth … and so on(for land), or may sing parts of this in my own instinctive poetry. At other times, my soul reaches beyond what is right there, to a wider world, feeling the islands of Britain, perhaps lands beyond, the whole wide sky and the heavens, the oceans and rivers. In my Grove, calling to the three worlds is something every individual contributes to at each rite, each person’s voice aloud adding to how we honour, as a gathering, nature as it holds us, providing the sacred gift of life and home: I honour the blackbird that sang to me at dawn / I honour the rain that washed my face on the way to the Grove / I honour the scent of the mud as the leaves start to decay … and so on.

Phil Ryder : In personal practice I call to the three worlds of land, sky and sea. I find it a simpler way than calling on the four elements, focusing more on the space where you stand and helping to deepen the connection.

Ximena Eduarda : I invoke the Triple Goddess in her subtle essence, her manifestations which are Earth, Sea and Air, and her triple fluids which are existence on me. I catch a glimpse of the worlds nourishing me, one from below and the other from above, while a third one is the one where I materialize by the forces in movement from the other two, allowing density, while I try to embrace with The Sight the worlds where I dwell.
