An Introduction to Prison Writing Ministry

Being of Service to Others

Whether you are following a specific druidic course or walking a solitary path, there may come a time when you ask yourself, Is this it?  Is there nothing more for me on this path?  You are not alone.

Many druids go into healing, aromatherapy, creativity in song and word, grove work or supporting their local Pagan communities.  If this is not for you, consider thinking outside the box.  How about becoming a writing minister.

The Pagan Federation Writing Ministry has been corresponding with prisoners for over 35 years, not only in the U.K. but also as far afield as Canada and the USA.

What does the role of a writing minister entail?  We are not pen-pals, and our remit is strictly limited to discussions of religion and spirituality only. Pagan prisoners, especially if they don’t have access to a Prison Pagan Chaplain, can find it difficult to follow their chosen tradition. Having someone to write to about their religion/faith makes a huge difference to their well-being.

Some correspondents have difficulties not only with their spirituality, but with how others treat them.  Even now paganism is still viewed by some as not being a proper religion, and there can be a lack of respect towards religious artefacts that a Pagan prisoner may have, especially their “Book of Shadows”.

I was a Prison Pagan Chaplain for many years and found it rewarding to have been of service to others, and I’m continuing that service now as a PF writing minister.

If you are seeking a way to be of service to others, why not consider becoming a writing minister.  You need to have been on your Pagan path for about 5 years, as well as a general knowledge of other Pagan traditions.
