SW2: About this course

There are many reputable courses and books on the subject of Druidry available for a fee to those seeking the path today. This course is one of many being offered for free to members of The Druid Network. It is designed to serve as a supplement to many of the excellent “How to be a Druid” courses and books that are available to Seekers.

Prior to the seasonal lessons, I have included a section on “Modern Druid Basics” to help you get started. These include some simple background information on Modern Druid practice, including simple methods of meditation, grounding and centering, setting up an altar, as well as the basics of ritual practice, including a dedication ritual that you can perform.

While the basics of Modern Druidry will be covered here, the purpose of this course is to provide insight into many concepts that we face as Seekers in the 21st Century, using the medium of mythology, cultural heritage and values handed down to us by our Ancestors.

The title, Shaping the Wheel, implies that it is up to each reader to take what tools I can provide and shape his or her own wheel of belief and practice by seeking his or her own truth. Druidry is what you make of it and it is my hope that I can provide a little help along the way.

“Shaping the Wheel” is Part 1 of a two-part course that will present various topics for meditation and practice on one’s own, using mythological tales, cultural lore and law as a base. The course is self-directed, arranged by season and will take approximately one year to complete if the lessons are worked on and completed approximately every two weeks.

It is recommended that you keep a journal of your experience through the course. It will help to keep track of everything as well as to look back upon later to gage your progress. A journal is also helpful in writing down ideas that you will want to use in your practice as well as any dreams, ritual or meditation experiences that you have.

The course can be started at any point in the year, although it is recommended that the course be started at the beginning of any one of the eight celebratory seasons of the Modern Pagan Year. There are three lessons for every one of the eight celebratory seasons, based on subjects that tend to correspond with the nature of the season.

Each lesson is formatted so that the concept is presented, supported with an article of lore and finished with some questions for you to ponder or an activity for you to try. You may meditate upon the featured story if desired.
